His citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal, awarded while serving as Sergeant 2009, 5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), states… "For conspicuous gallantry on the 9th May, 1915, near Rouge Bancs, when he performed many acts requiring exceptional coolness and courage, and in particular he went out twice, under heavy shell and machine gun fire, and brought in wounded men."

Although during the work the building was hit by a shell, he remained at his post and succeeded in rescuing a large number of fuses."
