Military Medal (MM)

The Military Medal was instituted in 1916 during the First World War.  It was awarded to non commissioned officers and other ranks of the Army for acts of bravery for which the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) was not considered appropriate.

All awards of the Military Medal were announced in the London Gazette, usually without a citation.

Bars were awarded for subsequent acts of bravery.

"His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Military Medal for bravery in the Field to the under-mentioned Non Commissioned Officers and Men:"

“Awarded the Military Medal for the part he played in the action of 3rd September 1916.  He was placed at the jumping off point to see that the telephone wire was properly paid out when the Companies assaulted.  In order to do so more effectively he advanced some way into no man’s land.  When the line was first driven back and considerable confusion was prevailing in the front trench he rallied and reorganised the Signallers and established communication with Battalion Headquarters, which was maintained for seven hours, enabling the Officer Commanding the front line to keep in touch with Headquarters.  He repaired two breaks in the cable during this time whilst the trench was under a severe barrage and much knocked about by high explosive.  He was specially noticed by two Officers during the day.”
