Hawick War Memorial

The Reserve Battalion of the 5th Battalion, Black Watch, was based at Stobs Camp, Hawick, for a short period in 1915.  Men from the Hawick area enlisted with the Battalion and five later became casualties while still with the Battalion, and one after being transferred to another Regiment.  These brave men are:

JOHN ANDERSON BALLANTYNE

Lance Corporal 240849, 4/5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)

Killed in action on 1 August 1918.  Age 23.

Born and enlisted at Hawick, Roxburghshire.

Son of John & Alison Ballantyne, of Hawick.

THOMAS HARKNESS

Private 235365, 4th (Ross Highland) Battalion (Territorial Force), Seaforth Highlanders

Killed in action on 14 October 1918.  Age 19.

Born and enlisted at Hawick, Roxburghshire.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Harkness, of 18 Teviot Road, Hawick.

Killed in action on 3 September 1916.  Age 19.

Born and enlisted at Hawick, Roxburghshire.

Son of John C. & Fanny E. Marchbank, of 9 Dickson Street, Hawick.

ALEXANDER STORIE

Private 240854, 4/5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)

Killed in action on 26 May 1918.

Born and enlisted at Hawick.

Son of Robert and E. Storie, of 16 Allars Crescent, Hawick; brother of William Storie, Private 101582, 3rd Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps, who died on 8 September 1918, age 24, and who is also buried in the same cemetery.

DAVID M. WYLIE

Lance Corporal 240863, 6th (Perthshire) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)

Killed in action on 20 July 1918.  Age 19.

Born and enlisted at Hawick.

Son of Mr & Mrs Francis Wylie, of 17 Trinity Street, Hawick.

Commemorated on the Stobs War Memorial to the 12 men of Slitrig Valley who died in the war.
