Cortachy And Clova War Memorial

1914 – 1919. 

TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CORTACHY AND CLOVA WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR.

 (The Honourable) PATRICK JULIAN HARRY STANLEY OGILVY, Military Cross

Acting Captain, No.1 Company, 1st Battalion, Irish Guards

Killed in action at The Broembeek on Tuesday, 9th October 1917. Age 21.

Born at Cortachy Castle, Kirriemuir, on 28th June 1896.

Son of the late David William Stanley, 10th Earl of Airlie (Lieutenant-Colonel, 12th Royal Lancers, killed in action at Diamond Hill, Pretoria, Transvaal, on 11th January 1900 during the South African War), and of his wife, Mabell Gore, Countess of Airlie.

His citation for the Military Cross, dated 14th November 1916, (awarded following the Battalion's action at Lesbœufs on 25th September 1916) states:

"Lt. The Hon. Patrick Julian Harry Stanley Ogilvy, I. Gds., Spec. Res.

For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led his company with great dash, and, on reaching the final objective, was the senior officer in the front line. He dealt with a difficult situation with great skill and determination, consolidating his position, and getting into touch with the battalions on his flanks. All this was carried out under heavy shellfire."

Only son of Archibald and Margaret L. Whyte, of Inverquharity, Kirriemuir.

Killed in action at Potijze on Monday, 12th November 1917.

Born at Kirriemuir on 23rd September 1887. A farmer who enlisted at Toronto, Canada, on 7th September 1915.

Husband of Charlotte Bennett, of Cortachy.

Died of wounds on 25th October 1918. Age 19.

Killed in action on Monday, 8th October 1917. Age 33.

Born at "Gella", Cortachy, educated at Wateresk School, Glen Clova, and emigrated to Australia c.1909. A farmer who enlisted at Meribee, Barellan, New South Wales on 26th April 1916.

Wounded at Bullicourt.

Son of Charles and Isabella McKenzie Robbie, of Blanche Cottage, The Clash, Cortachy.

Known to Mrs Christie, of 47 Roseby Street, Marrickville, Sydney, New South Wales.

Killed in action at Louverval during the German Spring Offensive on 21st March 1918.

Born at Cortachy and enlisted at Perth.
