Aberlemno War Memorial

TO THE GLORY OF GOD IN MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN CONNECTED WITH THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919.

 HUGH ANNESLEY GRAY-CHEAPE  Distinguished Service Order & Bar

Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars (Worcester Yeomanry); formerly Captain, 4th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's)

Died on 27th May 1918 as a result of the sinking of Hired Transport "Leasowe Castle" in the Mediterranean Sea 104 miles northwest of Alexandria, Egypt. Age 39.

Former joint Master of the Berwickshire Hunt. Son of the late Colonel and Mrs. Cheape, of Wellfield, Fife; husband of Carsina Gray-Cheape, of Carse Gray, Forfar.

Lieutenant-Colonel Gray-Cheape led the last cavalry charge of the British Army at Huj in the Sinai Desert at 1.30pm on 8th November 1917 when the 181 horses of the Worcester Yeomanry, ridden by men armed rifles with sabres, successfully charged a force of 20,000 Turks, 21 German field guns and three Austrian 5.9 Howitzers.

Distinguished Service Order gazetted 1st January 1917.

Bar to Distinguished Service Order, gazetted 4th February 1918, citation states:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led a charge against the enemy's guns with the utmost gallantry and determination. The enemy's gunners were firing at point-blank range, but the guns were captured and the gunners put out of action."

Lieutenant, "G" Company, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards

Died of wounds on 6th August 1917. Age 22.

Younger son of the 4th Earl of Minto, K.G., and of the Countess of Minto, of Minto House, Hawick.

Killed in action on 3rd May 1917. Age 32.

Born and enlisted at Glamis.

Son of Alexander and Charlotte Smart, of Balgavies, Forfar.

WILLIAM FULLERTON DUNCAN

Private S/21697, 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany's)

Killed in action on 7th August 1917. Age 23.

Born at Arbroath and enlisted at Perth.

Son of David Duncan, of Drummygar, Carmyllie.

Private 17138, 10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment)

Killed in action on 14th December 1915. Age 21.

Born at Westerton, Forfarshire, and enlisted at Derby.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fearn, of Westerton, Balgavies, Forfar;

grandson of the late Walter Fearn and Betsy Fearn (nee Jolly.

Killed in action on 9th April 1917. Age 24.

Born at Steelstrath, Kincardineshire, and enlisted at Brechin.

Son of James Glen and Mary Jane Glen (nee Croll), of Blibberhill, Brechin; brother of John R. Glen, Private 241008, 4/5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch, died on 1st April 1919.

Son of the late John Murray and Christina Murray (nee Herd); brother of Alexander Murray.

Died on 17th February 1917. Age 20.

Born at Rescobie, Forfarshire, lived at Nether Turin, Forfarshire, and enlisted at Perth.

Son of John and Catherine Wilkie, of Milldens, Guthrie, Forfarshire.
