Welcome!

to the Great War homepage of the 5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders).

On 2 November 1914, the 5th Battalion, Black Watch, became the first Scottish Battalion of the Territorial Force to be sent abroad during The Great War.  It was the first kilted battalion to land at the port of Le Havre, and was the last unit to be inspected by Field-Marshall Lord Roberts before his death on 14 November 1914.

The Battalion was amalgamated with it's sister Battalion, the 4th (City of Dundee) Battalion, Black Watch, to form 4/5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force) on 15 March 1916.

On 16 May 1918 the 4/5th Battalion absorbed the 9th (Service) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and remained on the continent until April 1919.

This website is intended as a memorial to the brave volunteers of the Territorial Force who stood firm in the ranks of the 5th (Angus & Dundee) Battalion (Territorial Force), Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) from 1914 to 1919.
